Baseball Claims Game One in 7-2 Win Over MVSU

HUNTSVILLE – Dalton Mitchell and Brandon Moore both went 3-for-4 at the plate as the Alabama A&M University baseball team defeated Mississippi Valley State, 7-2, to claim game one of the three-game series.

The Bulldogs improve to 8-35 on the year, while the Delta Devils fall to 11-26.

AAMU took an early lead with two runs when Carson McGregory doubled to right field to score JT O'Reel followed by Mitchell doubling to score McGregory.

Both teams remained scoreless in the second inning before Mississippi Valley answered with a single, which was followed by a fielding error to score the Devils. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fifth on a solo homer by O'Reel, to push the lead to 3-1.

Mitchell led off the sixth inning with a triple to left field before Tyus O'Neal-El grounded out to third base. Mitchell would then score after Moore hit a single to left center. In the top of the seventh,
Jonathan Smith II tripled down the left line before later crossing home just pitches later on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.

AAMU would secure their final two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Wilanier Betancourt singled to score O'Neal-El followed by Smith's sacrifice fly that scored Moore.

Fernando Diaz Jr. (1-1) earned the win for AAMU, going 7.0 innings and giving up just one run, while walking five and striking out four.

The Bulldogs will continue with the three-game series on Saturday for game two at 3 p.m., with Senior day activities starting at 2:40 p.m.
