Magic City Classic Tailgating Voted Among Top FCS Traditions

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — In the world of sports, college football game days are unique.

The pageantry and traditions are just as much a part of the experience as the contest that is played on the field. These customs are what make college football programs, and the institutions they represent, unique and special to the fans, student body, alumni, athletes and coaches.

Alabama A&M is no different.

From the Bulldog Walk held before each football game to the extravagant tailgating by fans outside the stadium — or even the famed Marching Maroon and White that entertains the thousands in attendance each Saturday in the fall — Alabama A&M has plenty of game day traditions that its fans are proud to pass down through the generations.

Hero Sports compiled a list of the best game day traditions in the FCS, and the Magic City Classic's tailgating experience was ranked ninth.

"Since the moment I arrived on campus, the one thing I get asked about the most is the Magic City Classic," first-year Alabama A&M coach Connell Maynor said at SWAC Media Day.

"This rivalry is something the fans are extremely passionate about. It's a year-round thing. This will be my first Classic, but I'm looking forward to being part of this rivalry that so many people are this passionate about."

Alabama A&M and Alabama State are scheduled to play in the Magic City Classic at Birmingham's Legion Field on Oct. 27 at 2:30 p.m. — the 82nd meeting in this storied rivalry.

The annual Magic City Classic is one of the largest FCS games each season. The attendance averages more than 60,000 people. Alabama A&M holds a 40-38-3 advantage in the rivalry, which dates back to 1924 and has been uninterrupted since 1945.
