Volleyball Splits Opening Day Matches

CARTERSVILLE, Ga.------ The Alabama A&M University volleyball team split its two games on the opening day of the season in the SWAC/MEAC Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs fell to North Carolina A&T 3-1 in their first match of the day before defeating North Carolina Central 3-0 in match two.

Match 1
The Lady Bulldogs opened the day up in a competitive match against North Carolina A&T, dropping the first set 30-32 before winning the second set 25-22. Despite their momentum, AAMU dropped the final two sets (17-25, 21-25) to end the match. Senior Jaelin Gant put away 14 kills for AAMU followed by nine kills from sophomore Maya Evans and eight from freshman Alana Cox. Sophomore Meredith Sieck set effectively for 22 assists, while freshman Maci Battle recorded 12 digs in the match.

Match 2:
In the second match of the day against North Carolina Central, Alabama A&M dominated, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19. After going back and forth in the first set, AAMU took control of the second set early on and did not look back. The Lady Bulldogs started the set with a 14-5 lead followed by a 5-0 run to take a 19-8 lead. Up 23-22, two consecutive kills by Gant gave the Lady Bulldogs the 2-0 lead.

Set three went back-and-forth for both teams. NCCU got off to a fast 4-1 lead, before three errors would allow the Lady Bulldogs to tie at four. AAMU would then use a 7-1 run to gain their first lead of the game. A kill from junior Terra Brooks broke up the 13-13 tie, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to regain the lead. NCCU continued to battle back but a kill from Gant and ace from Maya Evans would allow the Lady Bulldogs to secure the win.

Gant and Brooks both piled up 13 kills in the match, while Gant also led with 12 digs. Megan Evans contributed a match-high 30 assists and while Maya Evans swatted a match-best six blocks at the net for the Lady Bulldogs, who outhit NCCU by a .234 to .064 margin.

"I am proud of the way the team responded in our second match of the day," Head Coach Rose Powell said. "Our hitters played well and energized our team with our offensive play. Our serving and blocking looked really good also. We have a young team and will continue to get better."

With the split, the Lady Bulldogs are now 1-1 on the season and continue on Saturday in the SWAC/MEAC Tournament against South Carolina State at 1:00 p.m. and Gardner-Webb at 6:00 p.m.
