Jones scores 18, Women's Basketball runs past Mississippi Valley

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Nigeria Jones called her shot.

Before taking the floor, the Alabama A&M guard predicted it would be a good day.

She was right.

Jones poured in a season-high 18 points as Alabama A&M ran past Mississippi Valley State 80-60 Saturday afternoon in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

"I just had that feeling when we got here (at the arena)," said Jones, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb.

"Everyone showed up hungry and ready to play. That showed on the floor. We played well."

Alabama A&M (7-7, 2-1 in SWAC) never trailed after the first quarter.

Carnethia Brown drained three first-half 3-pointers to help Alabama A&M take a three-point lead into halftime.
Brown finished with 14 points, making four of eight attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

Jones took over the game in the second half, scoring 14 points in the final two quarters. She also had seven assists and three rebounds.

Tierra Dark finished with 14 points and six rebounds for Alabama A&M, while DeShawna Harper added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Erin Smith led Mississippi Valley (2-11, 1-1) with 16 points.

Alabama A&M now has won five of its past six games as the Bulldogs enter the heart of conference play.

"This is an important stretch for us," Jones said. "Anytime you can go on the road and get a conference win, it's a good thing. We've just got to continue to play hard — and play well as a team. If we do that, then we're going to give ourselves a chance to reach our goals."
