Kennedy, Alabama A&M hold off Alcorn State

HUNTSVILLE — Running the floor in transition, Andre Kennedy caught a pass in the lane and finished with a dunk.

A few seconds later, Gerron Scissum followed suit with almost the exact same thing.

The back-to-back dunks were the exclamation point on a significant night.

For the first time in four years, Alabama A&M has won consecutive men's basketball games.

Kennedy paced Alabama A&M with 16 points as the Bulldogs topped Alcorn State 71-62 Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference contest.

"We're working hard and trying to do things that haven't happened here in a while," Alabama A&M coach Dylan Howard said. "Now we've just got to keep building on what we've accomplished."

Since SWAC play began in early January, Howard has decided to lean heavily on Kennedy.

The 6-foot-7 forward has risen to the occasion.

For the seventh straight game, Kennedy broke into double-figures in the scoring column, finishing with 16 points and six rebounds.

Alcorn State tied the game with 4:18 remaining, but Alabama A&M (4-17, 3-4 in SWAC) responded with an 11-2 run to close the game.

Tre Todd and Scissum each scored 15 points for the Bulldogs.

"Things really have started to come together in the past couple of weeks," Todd said. "With the way Andre has played around the basket, it's forcing teams to double down on him, and that's creating opportunities for the rest of us.

"Now, it feels like everything finally is coming together. We're figuring out how to win, and that's contagious. That's a good thing."
