Johnson scores 16, Alabama A&M rallies past Grambling State in OT

HUNTSVILLE — With a wide smile stretched across his face, Arthur Johnson nodded in approval.

For good reason.

Johnson and his Alabama A&M teammates earned an opportunity to celebrate a win.

Johnson paced Alabama A&M with 16 points as the Bulldogs topped Grambling State 65-60 in overtime Monday night in a SWAC men's basketball game.

"Getting an opportunity to celebrate in the locker room was special," Johnson said. "Everyone was excited. We found a way to get over the hump and win a close game. This is something we can build on."

For Alabama A&M (2-14, 1-1 in SWAC), getting the team's first conference win was not easy.

The two teams swapped leads 13 times before Evan Wiley made a 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining in overtime that put Alabama A&M up for good.

Wiley finished with eight points, while Jalen Reeder scored 11.

Ivy Smith led Grambling State (6-9, 0-2) with 27 points.

The shots Alabama A&M's guards made on the perimeter were significant, but another prominent storyline was Andre Kennedy's play in the paint.

Facing a Grambling State roster that has multiple players who are 6-foot-8 or taller, Kennedy faced a daunting task.

The Alabama A&M forward rose to the occasion, with Kennedy recording a double-double, scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds.

"That was huge," Johnson said. "We needed that (from Kennedy). When we get that type of performance, I like our chances against just about anyone."

Alabama A&M travels to Mississippi Valley on Saturday.

"I feel like this is a win we'll be able to build on," Johnson said. "Getting over that hump and picking up that first conference win was huge for our confidence. Everyone is excited and we can't wait to get back at it."
