HUNTSVILLE — One significant moment followed by another.

For the Alabama A&M women's soccer team, that is the story of the season.

On Friday, Alabama A&M etched yet another major accomplishment on this season's resume when the Bulldogs scored two second-half goals to top Howard 2-1 for a Southwestern Athletic Conference win.

Not only was the win Alabama A&M's first-ever against perennial power Howard, but it also was the Bison's first conference loss since falling 2-1 at Texas Southern on Sept. 23, 2018 — snapping the defending SWAC champion's 20-game conference winning streak.

The win gives Alabama A&M an opportunity to claim another significant goal:

One of the top four seeds in the SWAC tournament.

To ensure that happens, however, Alabama A&M needs to close out the regular season on Friday with a win against rival Alabama State.

Alabama A&M (8-8-1, 6-3 in SWAC) hosts Alabama State (5-13, 4-5) on Friday at 3 p.m. The match also is the Bulldogs' Senior Day.

Heading into the regular season's final weekend Howard and Prairie View A&M already have secured the SWAC tournament's top two seeds, respectively. The next two tournament seeds still are up for grabs.

Alabama A&M currently is tied for third place with Jackson State (6-11, 5-3-1) in the conference standings, while Texas Southern (6-9-1, 5-3-1) is in fifth place. Both Jackson State and Texas Southern hold head-to-head tiebreakers against Alabama A&M.

Jackson State hosts Southern (4-10-1, 3-5-1) on Friday, while Texas Southern travels to rival Prairie View A&M (9-7, 8-1).

For Alabama A&M, a win against Alabama State would clench either the third or fourth seed, regardless of what else happens this weekend in the conference.

Alabama A&M put itself in this position with yet another strong performance by senior midfielder Iris Torres.

Against Howard, Torres scored an unassisted goal early in the second half on a cornerkick to tie the score, and with less than eight minutes remaining, she delivered an assist to Jameela Barrett that produced the game-winning goal.

Torres was selected as the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
