Lady Bulldogs Host Austin Peay on Saturday

HUNTSVILLE __ The Alabama A&M women's basketball team resume action on Saturday afternoon as they host a matchup with Austin Peay of the Ohio Valley Conference at 2 p.m. in Elmore Gymnasium. The game is the first for the Lady Bulldogs since the Denver Thanksgiving Classic last month.

These two teams have faced off each of the previous two seasons, with the Lady Governors winning both matchups.

  • A&M is coming off a big overtime win on the road over the University of Denver, 86-83 in their previous game where they had four double-digit scorers in juniors DeShawna Harper (17), Tierra Dark (14) and Nigeria Jones (12), along with freshman Jasmine Stanley (11).
  • On the season, Alabama A&M is shooting 33.9 percent from the field and 22.7 percent from three-point range.
  • Alabama A&M is coming off their highest scoring game of the year in the 86-83 win in the last game of the Denver Thanksgiving Classic.
  • Nationally the Lady Bulldogs rank fifth in offensive rebounds per game (18.3), with Dariauna Lewis currently leading the nation at 6.4 per game.
  • A&M is also highly ranked nationally in fewest turnovers per game (102.0, 21st) and turnover margin per game (+6.14, 29th).

  • Austin Peay is currently 5-2 overall, with their only losses coming against Power Five opponents Illinois and 14th ranked Kentucky.
  • The Lady Governors are coming to the state of Alabama after falling on the road at the University of Kentucky on Sunday, Dec. 1, 81-52. Junior Brianah Ferby led the squad with 13 points and two rebounds.
  • Currently, the Governors rank fourth nationally in turnovers forced, averaging 25.3 per game.
  • Austin Peay leads the OVC in scoring offense (75.6 points per), averaging five more points per game than all other OVC teams.
  • Senior forward Arielle Gonzalez-Varner is leading the team in scoring and rebounding at 12.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Maggie Knowles (11.6 ppg) and freshman Kirby Shay-Lee (10.1 ppg) are the only other two Lady Governors averaging double figures.
