Harper pours in season-high 26, women's basketball surges past Alabama State

MONTGOMERY — DeShawna Harper continues to shine on the big stage.

Now that Alabama A&M has entered a key part of its conference schedule, Harper has played her best basketball of the season.

That trend continued on the home floor of Alabama A&M's biggest rival.

Harper poured in a season-high 26 points as Alabama A&M surged past Alabama State 65-57 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game.

The win helps keep Alabama A&M (12-11, 7-5 in SWAC) in contention for one of the top spots in a tight and competitive conference race.

Alabama A&M led most of the game, but the Bulldogs had to overcome a major second-half momentum swing.

After taking a 10-point lead into halftime, Alabama A&M saw Alabama State (-14, 8-4) erase the deficit in the third period, using a 19-2 run to take a seven-point lead of its on.

Harper and company made sure that did not last.

Harper made a pair of clutch free throws to pull Alabama A&M within one by the end of the third period, and Alabama A&M used a 14-3 run late in the fourth to regain the lead for good.

Nigeria Jones finished with 17 points, five rebounds and six assists for Alabama A&M, while Tierra Dark added seven points.
