Texas Southern uses second-half run to top women's basketball

HOUSTON — Andreana Wrister can be a game-changer.

The Texas Southern guard lived up to the hype.

With her team backed into a corner, Wrister put her team on her shoulders, recording a double-double as Texas Southern used a late rally to top Alabama A&M 53-45 Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

Alabama A&M (9-11, 4-5 in SWAC) was on the verge of a significant road win. The Bulldogs led more than 33 minutes of the game, and had a 15-point cushion early in the second half.

Wrister made sure that did not stand up.

With the game on the line, Texas Southern (9-11, 5-4) put the ball in Wrister's hands often in the second half, and she consistently found ways to get buckets.

Makenna Pouengue drained a half-court shot to end the third period, pulling Texas Southern within seven, and Wrister helped take care of the rest.

Wrister finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, sparking a 16-3 fourth period run where Texas Southern took the lead with about six minutes remaining and never trailed again.

Alabama A&M dominated the first half, holding Texas Southern to 15 points, taking an 11-point cushion into the break.
Lauren McKee led Alabama A&M with 11 points, while DeShawna Harper added seven.

Rebounding was a major factor. Texas Southern finished with 51 rebounds, including 19 offensive boards, compared to Alabama A&M's 36 rebounds.
