Jones, Harper lead Women's Basketball past Mississippi Valley

Box Score HUNTSVILLE — DeShawna Harper understood the stakes.

Same goes for Nigeria Jones.

And the Alabama A&M women's basketball duo rose to the occasion.

With Alabama A&M needing a conference win at home, Harper and Jones delivered, combining for 33 points as the Bulldogs topped Mississippi Valley 78-70 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

For Alabama A&M, this was an important night.

After dropping two straight SWAC games on the road, the Bulldogs needed a win.

Alabama A&M (10-11, 5-5 in SWAC) responded. The Bulldogs led the majority of the game, using a second-half surge to put Mississippi Valley (4-17, 3-7) away.

Harper led Alabama A&M with 18 points, making 2 of 3 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Jones added 15 points with four rebounds. Tierra Dark finished with 13 points and five rebounds.

Even though Alabama A&M got strong performances from its backcourt players, the Bulldogs' post players were the difference.

Freshman Elexis Evans finished with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots for Alabama A&M, while sophomore center Ashlyn Dotson had nine points and five rebounds.

Sydnie Ward led Mississippi Valley with 15 points.

Alabama A&M hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday.
