Texas Southern rallies past men's basketball

HOUSTON — Brandon Houston wanted an upset.

Facing a Texas Southern team that has won four of the past five Southwestern Athletic Conference titles — and has beaten three power conference teams this season — the Alabama A&M reserve big man put together his best performance of the season.

But the upset was not meant to be.

Texas Southern used a second-half run to top Alabama A&M 84-74 Monday night in a SWAC men's basketball game.

Texas Southern (11-11, 6-3 in SWAC) is one of the favorites in the conference. During the non-conference schedule, Texas Southern picked up road wins against Baylor, Oregon and Texas A&M — two of which were ranked in the Associated Press Men's Basketball Poll at the time
.
Alabama A&M, however, took its shot at an upset while on the road in Houston.

After trailing the entire first half, Alabama A&M got a spark from its bench, with Houston providing three significant buckets that not only helped the Bulldogs take the lead in the second half, but build a 10-point cushion.

Houston led Alabama A&M (4-19, 3-6) with 15 points, while Gerron Scissum tossed in 14. Evan Wiley scored 12 for the Bulldogs, while Brandon Wright added 10.

But Texas Southern stole the momentum late in the second half, using a late run to retake the lead and hold off the upset.
Alabama A&M hosts Mississippi Valley on Saturday.
