Alabama A&M fall in Round 2, but still alive in the SWAC Tournament


MONTGOMERY, Ala __ In a battle between conference foes for a spot in the semifinal round, Prairie View came out swinging and threatened in the first, getting two runners in scoring position with one out. The Lions scored first on a sacrifice fly to center field by Laurisa Hernandez, and again on a fielding error before pitcher Lauren Hayden forced a pop up to end the inning.
 
The Lions struck again with an RBI double from Shelby Williams in the second. The Lady Bulldogs looked to respond in the bottom half but ended the inning with two runners left on base. 
 
Prairie View added onto their lead once more in the third, with Hernandez hitting a solo homer to center field to put the score at 4-0 before the Bulldogs could get out of the inning. 
 
After Alabama A&M continued to struggle at the plate, Prairie View extended their lead once more with a double by Serena Antone to bring in two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
 
The Lady Bulldogs responded in the sixth with a solo shot from Danielle Hansell, however, could not add any other runs to reduce the deficit.
 
Vanessa Castro (10-4) picked up the win for Prairie View in a complete game, while Hayden (9-9) picked up the loss for Alabama A&M. 
 
The Lady Bulldogs will play later on today against Alcorn State for a chance to move on to the next round in the double elimination tournament.
