Burnett named SWAC Offensive POW; Lady Bulldogs Host Two Matchups This Week

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ Freshman forward D'Essence Burnett was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for her play over the past week in matches against the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Western Kentucky, the conference announced earlier this week.

Burnett, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, scored the opening goal five minutes into the game in a 2-1 win over UAH, while also adding a goal in a loss at Western Kentucky. On the season, Burnett has started all six games so far for the Lady Bulldogs, and leads the team with five total points.

THIS WEEK
The Alabama A&M women's soccer team will host two home matches this week as they host Tennessee Chattanooga on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. and Louisiana Monroe on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
 
SERIES NOTES
  • Alabama A&M is 2-3 at home against the Mocs. The Bulldogs fell in their last home match 1-0 in 2017.
  • The 2014 match between teams produced the only overtime matchup in the series, ending in a double-overtime 3-3 draw in Chattanooga.

 A&M NOTES
  • The Bulldogs are 2-4 overall with 2-1 wins over North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville. The Bulldogs fell 7-1 at Western Kentucky in their last outing.
  • Freshman D'Essence Burnett leads the team with five points, including two goals and one assist that led to a Makayla Rushing game-winner against UNA.
  • Ayanna Gooden also had a game winner for the Lady Bulldogs in the win over UAH.
  • Keeper Jodi Medina has played all 450 minutes in the net and has 35 saves for a .636 saves percentage on 111 shots faced.
UTC NOTES
  • Mocs are 3-2-2 overall with 1-0 wins on the road against Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama and Lipscomb. The Mocs two losses came against Georgia State and Vanderbilt, while the two ties occurred against Austin Peay to open the season and the University of Alabama.
  • Samantha Shaw leads in goals with two, including a game winner in a win over Lipscomb. Shaw also had the tying goal against Alabama.
  • Keepers Ashton Shields and Abbey Saddler have split time in the net. Saddler has earned two SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors as she is 2-0-1 with two shutouts on a .909 save percentage.
NEXT UP
Alabama A&M will host Louisiana Monroe at home on Sunday, September 22 at 1 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
 
LOUISIANA MONROE NOTES
  • The Warhawks are 2-3-1 on the year with 1-0 wins at home against Southern Miss and Northwestern State. Losses have come against Grambling (2-3), Louisiana Tech (1-5) and Central Arkansas (0-4). Louisiana Monroe tied with Southeastern Louisiana at one goal each.
  • Taylor Altieri and Melissa Taft both have two goals apiece for the Warhawks, while Khyjian Thomas and Camryn Ciaramella have one each.
  • Goalkeeper Angel Hailey has played 380 minutes in the net where she has 24 saves on 58 shots faced for a .727 saves percentage.
