Lady Bulldogs Defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff in SWAC Opener

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Freshman led an offensive onslaught for the Lady Bulldogs' attack in a 4-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday afternoon in the conference opener for both teams.
 
Alabama A&M came out strong as they earned ten shots within the first 30 minutes of action. The Bulldogs were the first to get on the board, on an own goal score in the final four minutes of the first half for the opening goal of the match.
 
The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the second half, with D'Essence Burnett scoring off an assist from junior center back Camille Nurse in the 46th minute to put the score at 2-0.
 
In the 56th minute, Pine Bluff put some pressure on the Bulldogs defensively, and eventually found the goal in the 59th minute of on a shot by Sarah Wright for a 2-1 score.
 
Alabama A&M stretched the lead further in the final two minutes as Makayla Rushing scored in the 88th minute and Jasmine Taylor scored her first career goal in the 89th to close out the match, for a final of 4-1.

BEHIND THE WIN
  • The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Golden Lions, 19-5, with seven of those on goal. Rushing led the team with seven shots, while senior Iris Torres and freshman D'Essence Burnett both had three shots.
  • Alabama A&M earned three corner kicks compared to one by Pine Bluff.
  • Junior goalkeeper Jodi Medina collected two saves during the match. 
  • Alabama extends their win streak to three consecutive games over Pine Bluff.
UP NEXT
Alabama A&M's next two matches will be on the road at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, their first conference match of the season, and at Grambling before returning home for two matches on Homecoming weekend.
