Bulldogs Crush Marauders of Central State as Jordan Bentley Adds His Name to the Record Books

MOBILE, Ala. – Senior running back Jordan Bentley had himself more than a day as he ran for three touchdowns to claim the school record for most rushing touchdowns in a career, as Alabama A&M defeated Central State 63-20 in Ladd-Peebles Stadium Saturday night. The Bulldogs are now 3-2, 0-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Marauders fall to 1-3, and 1-0 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition.
 
Bentley finished his day with 105 yards on 21 carries along with his three scores, while junior quarterback Aqeel Glass got back in stride as he spread the ball out to finish with 339 yards passing and four touchdowns in the contest on only four incompletions (22-26).
 
On defense, junior linebacker Armoni Holloway led the Bulldogs with 6 tackles along with 1.5 tackles for loss and half a sack. Senior safety Desmond Fletcher also made a big contribution, finishing with four tackles and an interception, one of three for Alabama A&M on the game. Junior corner Joshua M. Williams earned his first interception on the season, while freshman Demarco Gibson gained his first career interception and a 42-yard return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
 
GAME OVERVIEW
  • It did not take long for Alabama A&M to get on the board as Bentley scored on a 10-yard touchdown to go up 7-0 with 13:22 in the first quarter.
  • Following a three and out by Central State, the Bulldogs drove down the field and scored on the second Bentley touchdown of the night to go up 14-0 with just under seven minutes to play in the opening quarter.
  • The Marauders responded on their second drive of the game, as they drove down the field to score on a 24-yard pass to make it a one score game at 14-7 for the final score from either team in the first quarter.
  • From there, Alabama A&M scored 14 straight points starting with Glass completing a 27-yard pass to tight end Kendric Johnson to put the Bulldogs up 21-7. Following another three and out for the Bulldog defense, Glass capped off another scoring drive by completing a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Anthony Howard to put the score at 28-7.
  • With just over four minutes in the half, Central State began driving down the field once again to score as they punched in a one yard run to close the gap to 28-14.
  • Glass and the offensive unit responded twice more for the Bulldogs on a two play drive that saw him complete a 43-yard pass to Zabrian Moore and a 35-yard touchdown to Abdul Ibrahim to put the score at 35-14. Minutes later, Glass completed another 26-yard pass to Moore for a score to make the halftime score 42-14.
  • Things didn't change much in the second half as the Bulldogs scored 14 unanswered to start the half, with the first score coming off a 15-play, 75-yard drive and was capped off by the third rushing touchdown from Bentley with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • Moments later, Savannah State transfer quarterback Tyrone Bell came in for a drive and threw a 33-yard touchdown to Moore for his second score of the game to push the lead to 56-14.
  • Alabama A&M scored its final touchdown on an interception and a 42-yard return by freshman Demarco Gibson, the first of both of his career.
  • The Marauders added a final score in the fourth quarter on a rushing touchdown with ten seconds left in the game to make the final score 63-20.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
  • Glass finished the day with 339 yards with 22 completions on 26 attempts and four passing touchdowns for an average of yards per attempt. He now has 1460 passing yards and 14 touchdowns with a 153.24 passer rating on the season.
  • Moore finished with a career-highs of eight catches for 218 yards, also finishing with two touchdowns. He is currently the leading receiver for the Bulldogs with 26 receptions for 482 total yards.
  • Bentley finished with 105 yards on 21 rushes for yards per carry, along with one catch for six yards during the game. He also set a new school record for career rushing touchdowns with 29.
  • Fletcher finished with four tackles and his second interception of the season in the third quarter.
KEY STATS
  • The Bulldogs outscored the Marauders 28-7 in the second quarter to take control of the game.
  • Alabama A&M outgained Central State through the air 384-105, and on the ground 178-164.
  • The Bulldogs moved the ball down the field to the tune of 8.3 yards per play.
 
UP NEXT
Alabama A&M will return home next week as SWAC foe Texas Southern comes to town for the 2019 Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 5. Kickoff time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
