UAPB tops Bulldogs in Louis Crews Classic

HUNTSVILLE — Kesha Williams shined bright in the spotlight.

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff running back gained yards in large chunks as the Golden Lions raced out to a commanding lead in the Louis Crews Classic.

And Alabama A&M never was able to catch up.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff amassed 632 yards of offense as the Golden Lions ran past Alabama A&M 52-34 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game.

"We've got a long way to go—a lot of work to do," Alabama A&M coach Connell Maynor said. "Those guys (UAPB) played well. I tried to tell our guys all week that this was a much-improved football team that we were playing. They showed it on the field."

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-1, 1-0 in SWAC) proved it has offensive playmakers.

That includes Williams.

Williams rushed for 212 yards on 21 carries, averaging 9.8 yards per rush.

The momentum shifted in Arkansas-Pine Bluff's favor in the second quarter, when Skyler Perry threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Brown, and Shannon Patrick threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Harry Ballard to give the Golden Lions a 31-14 halftime lead.

After recovering an on-side kick to start the third quarter, Patrick threw his third touchdown pass of the game — a 27-yard completion to Dejuan Miller — to stretch the lead to 24 points.

Patrick passed for 196 yards and three touchdowns, and Perry passed for 109 yards and three scores.

"We shot ourselves in the foot, time and time again," Maynor said. "The game kind of was a shoot-out there in the first quarter, then we had some busted assignments, made some mistakes, and things got away from us.

"One mistake can kill a drive. We've got to get the little things cleaned up. We've got an explosive offense. If we just take care of what we've got to do, then we can score. But we just keep shooting ourselves in the foot."

Alabama A&M (1-1, 0-1) battled back in the second half. Gary Quarles and Jordan Bentley each rushed for third-quarter touchdowns.

Bentley finished with 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Aqeel Glass passed for 352 yards and two touchdowns, completing 30 of 43 attempts with an interception.

Alabama A&M travels to North Alabama next week for a non-conference game.

"We've got to learn from this and get better," Maynor said. "It's pretty simple. We've just got to clean things up and get better."
