Basketball Programs Look to Continue Strong Play in Quick Turnaround

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ The Alabama A&M men's and women's basketball teams look to go 2-0 in their first conference home stand on Monday against Mississippi Valley State at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium. 

The doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the AAMU Athletics YouTube channel, as well as live stats, which can be found online at aamusports.com.

Both teams earned wins in their first home conference games last night against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Lady Bulldogs won 74-55, while the men defeated the Golden Lions 59-49.

The Lady Bulldogs (5-10 overall, 1-2 SWAC) are looking to bring the strong offensive play from Saturday afternoon into Monday's game.

A&M had two scorers in double figures with forward Dariauna Lewis, who is leading the conference in scoring, recorded a 29 point, 11 rebound double-double while also adding seven blocks on the defensive end. Junior Nigeria Jones scored a season-high 17 points along with four assists. The Lady Bulldogs also recorded a season-high tying 16 assists, with four players recording at least three in the win.

The Devilettes (1-12 overall, 0-2 SWAC) enter the contest after losing to Alabama State 77-64 Saturday night. MVSU is led by Ayonna Cotten, who is leading the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game and Shelli Thigpen, who is second on the team in points and rebounds (10.0 points, 5.1 rebounds per game).

On the men's side, the Bulldogs (5-9 overall, 2-1 SWAC) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 59-49 on Saturday, despite only shooting 33.3% percent from the field. 

Guard Cameron Alford scored a freshman record 32 points of the bench for the Bulldogs, on 10-for-15 shooting and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, along with four assists. Guard Cameron Tucker was the second leading scorer for the team with eight points, five rebounds and four assists on the night.

Mississippi Valley State (0-14 overall, 0-2 SWAC) fell to the Hornets of Alabama State 81-75 Saturday night. The Delta Devils had three double-digit scorers in the loss, led by Torico Simmons with 26 points, Caleb Hunter scored 20 points, while Jordan Lyons recorded a 10 point, 12 rebound double-double.

Alabama A&M will remain home on Monday night to face off against Mississippi Valley on Monday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. before heading to Birmingham to play rival Alabama State at the Bill Harris Arena on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
