Lady Bulldogs Pick Up Huge Blowout Win Over Rival Hornets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. __ Three Lady Bulldogs score in double figures as they leave Birmingham with a dominant 75-48 win over rival Alabama State in the Bill Harris Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Dariauna Lewis led all scorers with 16 points along with eight rebounds, while Nigeria Jones added 14 points and five assists and Deshawna Harper added 14 points of her own along with three rebounds.

Coach Richards Comments
  • "As a team we understand how important this game is to our fans and our community, and this win feels great because we've been working extremely hard." Richards stated "I'm so proud of our upperclassmen stepping up and being leaders today on the floor and being composed for 40 minutes today. We executed and we were disciplined, which are areas we've been struggling with in the past, so that's why I credit our upperclassmen for just leading the way and making sure we executed plays, remain solid on defense, being consistent on the glass and playing hard."
  • When asked about forward Dariauna Lewis, Richards had nothing but praise on her game, "She played well, she is a special young lady, full of energy and she's electrifying. We really love that we have her, she rebounds, she's a scorer around the basket, plays with a lot of emotion and that's contagious."
  • When asked on the impact of today's win, Richards had more praise for the leadership of her team, "It was extremely important, I felt good again because of my upperclassmen, they were talking at the beginning of the week letting it be known how important this game was because of the conference standings, as a lot of the teams were 2-2. So as a coach you love when your team is focused and ready to play, especially for a game like this."
Quarter-by-Quarter
  • The Lady Bulldogs opened the game on a 4-0 run with the opening basket by forward Jameica Cobb and the second by Dariauna Lewis, before the Lady Hornets responded to tie the game at four. The Lady Bulldogs responded to end the quarter on a 7-3 run to start the second quarter with a score of 15-14.
  • Deshawna Harper opened the second quarter with a corner three pointer for the Lady Bulldogs before a fast break score by Jasmine Stanley off an assist from Cobb take a 20-14 lead. After back-to-back scores by the Hornets, A&M began to take control of the momentum, taking a 34-26 lead before the Hornets scored a lay-up at the buzzer.
