Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | AAMU Sports Information

Jones drains game-winner, sends women's basketball past rival Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Catch. Dribble. Shoot.

Game over.

With five seconds remaining on the clock, Nigeria Jones caught a pass on the wing, put the ball on the floor once and drained one of the biggest 3-pointers of her collegiate career, sending Alabama A&M past rival Alabama State 56-55 Saturday afternoon.
Alabama A&M (12-11, 8-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference) extended its winning streak to four games while sweeping Alabama State for the first time since becoming a SWAC member.

For Alabama A&M, almost everything that occurred before Jones' go-ahead 3-pointer was a struggle.

Before the midway point of the first period, Alabama A&M already had three starters in foul trouble, and an eight-point lead quickly evaporated by halftime.

Getting the bulk of its points from the free-throw line, Alabama State built a six-point lead by the five-minute mark of the fourth period.

With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Alabama A&M made its run.

DeShawna Harper made a pair of 3-pointers in the closing minutes to briefly give Alabama A&M the lead, and the two teams continued to match buckets until Alabama State took a two-point lead with 9.7 seconds remaining on the clock.

That set up Jones' game-winner.

Coming out of a timeout, Jones caught a pass on the wing and quickly drained a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining, sending the Alabama A&M bench to its feet.

Jones finished with 11 points, making 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Harper led Alabama A&M with 16 points, while Dariauna Lewis scored 12 points with seven rebounds.
