Lady Bulldogs Score Clutch Basket to Secure 59-57 Win Over Southern

HUNTSVILLE __ Late game heroics were a necessity as DeShawna Harper found Lazurea Saunders late in the ball game for a layup with seven seconds to play to give the Lady Bulldogs the 59-57 win over Southern in Elmore Gymnasium on Monday night.

Sophomore forward Dariauna Lewis led the team with 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Harper added 10 points and was the only other Bulldog in double figures in the win.


Quarter-by-Quarter
  • The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Jags played the first half of the quarter evenly, as the teams saw the score tied three times in the opening minutes of the game. Alabama A&M earned a four-point lead, 10-6, at the 5:46 mark, and found themselves up 15-11 with 3:12 to go in the quarter. Southern fought back to close the gap to one with 30 seconds to play, before DeShawna Harper made a floater at the buzzer to give the Lady Bulldogs a 17-14 lead going into the second quarter.
  • After a strong first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs went scoreless during the first four minutes of the frame, as Southern began to control momentum with a 10-0 run to take a 27-19 lead. Forward Dariauna Lewis ended the scoring drought with 5:29 to play on two free throws, and the Lady Bulldogs proceeded to fight back to tie the game and later take the 31-29 lead into the locker room for halftime. Lewis finished the first half with 10 points, while Elexis Evans came off the bench with a huge game-changing eight points and a block in the first 20 minutes.
  • The two teams remained close in the second half, as Southern outscored A&M 7-2 in the opening minutes of the frame to claim a 36-33 lead with 6:28 to go in the quarter. The Jags continued their strong play as they stretched their lead to seven at the 2:33 mark by going up 43-36, however went scoreless for the rest of the quarter as the Lady Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to go into the final quarter trailing 43-41.
  • A&M opened the final quarter on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead with 7:52 to play, before Southern scored to close the gap to one at 46-45, and later tied the game at 49 with 5:22 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs fell behind by six, 55-49, with three minutes to play, before responding to pull within one and later take the 57-56 lead on a layup by Nigeria Jones with 33 seconds to go. After a made free throw by the Jaguars, A&M got the ball with 16 seconds left for their final possession, where Lazurea Saunders put in the winning basket on a lay in assisted by Harper. The Jaguars got the ball with seven seconds left having to go the length of the floor, but were prevented from scoring as the Bulldogs secured the 59-57 victory in exciting fashion.
Post-Game Notes

  • The Lady Bulldogs shot 25-for-56 (44.6 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 2-for-8 (25 percent) from the three-point line and 7-for-11 from the charity stripe (63.6 percent).
  • Alabama A&M dominated the battle of the painted area, outscoring Southern 42-20 in the lane during the contest.
  • The Lady Bulldogs were outrebounded by the Lady Jags in the matchup 34-29. A&M grabbed 10 offensive boards for nine second chance points, while Southern grabbed eight offensive boards for 11 second chance points.
  • The A&M bench also provided a spark in the contest, as the Bulldogs outscored the Jaguar bench 19-12. DeShawna Harper scored 10 and Elexis Evans added nine for A&M.
  • Turnovers: The Lady Bulldogs won the turnover battle, forcing their opponent into 17 turnovers and scored 19 points off the miscues. A&M turned the ball over 11 times and allowed nine points off of their mistakes.
