Hovermill notches 20th career win, baseball tops Mississippi Valley to open SWAC series

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Michael Hovermill has reached his first career milestone of the season.

And then the Alabama A&M right-hander matched another.

Hovermill struck out 11 as Alabama A&M held off Mississippi Valley State 5-4 Friday afternoon to open a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball series.

For Hovermill (1-2), the pitching win was the 20th of his collegiate career. The 11 strikeouts also matched a career high.

Hovermill gave Alabama A&M (1-10, 1-0 in SWAC) 11 innings on the mound, holding Mississippi Valley State (0-8, 0-1) to eight hits and two earned runs.

Alabama A&M took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a five-run rally. Kyle Redmond drove in Sam Mickels with an RBI single, and Pierre Brewton drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single. Brandon Moore had an RBI triple and Dillon Roop added an RBI single.

Brewton led Alabama A&M at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs. JanMikell Bastardo and Mickels added two hits each.

Trailing by three in the top of the seventh inning, Mississippi Valley State rallied back, but Fernando Diaz Jr. recorded a two-inning save, striking out one while holding the Delta Devils hitless in the eighth and ninth innings.

Alabama A&M hosts Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Game 2 of the three-game SWAC series.
