Baker strikes out 8, baseball tops Mississippi Valley

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Working at a fast pace, Peyton Baker quickly pitched his way through the innings.

It was not perfect, but still efficient.

And more than good enough to give Alabama A&M its second-straight win.

Baker struck out eight while holding Mississippi Valley State to four hits through seven innings as the Bulldogs topped the Delta Devils 8-3 Saturday afternoon for a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball win.

Heading into the seventh inning, Baker (1-1) had thrown about 70 percent of his pitches for strikes. But the right-hander still gave up six free passes, walking four and hitting two batters.

A sharp curveball helped Baker make sure Mississippi Valley did not put together a rally. The Delta Devils (0-9, 0-2 in SWAC) left seven runners on base and hit into two groundball double-plays.

Baker only allowed two earned runs.

Fernando Diaz Jr. struck out three in two innings of relief.

Alabama A&M (2-10, 2-0) staked Baker to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs added one in the fourth and three in the seventh.

Sam Mickels led Alabama A&M at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a solo homer. Dillon Roop went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Carter Duke and Trevor Berkemeyer each had a hit and an RBI. Brandon Moore added two hits.

Alabama A&M hosts Mississippi Valley State on Sunday to close out a three-game conference series.
