Men's Basketball Falls to Prairie View in Final Road Game of Regular Season

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas __ Alabama A&M men's basketball fell on the road to Prairie View 72-63 on Monday night in the Williams Nicks Building.
 
Garrett Hicks led the Bulldogs with 18 points on the night, while TJ Parham recorded 12 points and Cameron Tucker added 10 points and four assists in the loss.
 

First Half
  • Panthers started fast, jumping out 6-2 early, and 10-5 before TJ Parham hit a three from straight away to pull within two and Cameron Alford scored on a fast break to tie the game at the 15:40 mark.
  • The Panthers led the ball game 12-10 at the first media timeout, but the Bulldogs scored first out of the media to tie the game at 12 and later took a 15-12 lead off a basket and free throw by Cameron Tucker with 13:46 to play.
  • The Bulldogs took a 17-12 lead on another basket by Tucker with just over 12 minutes to play, before the Panthers responded to reduce the lead back to three on the next possession.
  • The Bulldogs scored on their next two possessions coming out of the under 12 media timeout, and pushed the lead to 21-14 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half before the Panthers responded with a four-point swing to bring the score to 21-18.
  • After the teams traded three point makes, Prairie View pulled within one, 24-23, heading into the next media timeout.
  • After two free throws by the Bulldogs, the Panthers made two consecutive threes to take a 29-26 lead, before Parham sank two free throws to close within one.
  • With 2:30 to play, Brandon Powell tied the game at 30 with a basket, and EJ Williams scored on a strong finish to tie the ball game again at 42 with under a minute to play, however the Panthers scored on the next possession to take the 34-32 lead heading into the locker room for the half.
Second Half
  • Prairie View came out of the break strong, scoring on their first three possessions to stretch the lead up to eight at 40-33 within the first two minutes of the half.
  • The Panthers pushed their lead ten at 45-35 on a basket plus the free throw right before the first media timeout with 15:52 remaining.
  • The Bulldogs responded to get the score back within single digits with two free throws on their next possession, however the deficit was stretched back out to 11 after a corner three from the Panthers.
  • With just under 12 minutes to play, Prairie View scored on a layup to push the lead up to 14 at 51-37, however Parham sank two free throws moments later to reduce the deficit back to 12.
  • Prairie View extended their lead to 15 points at the 10-minute mark after another three, and pushed it to 15 once more minutes later after the Bulldogs had cut the lead back to 12.
  • With 7:09 to play, the Panthers pushed their lead to a game high 17 points at 62-45, however the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 10 with 4:30 to play and once more at 67-57 with 3:27 remaining, but only scored five more points in the ball game to fall 73-62.
Post-Game Notes
  • Alabama A&M Starters: Cameron Tucker, Garrett Hicks, Cameron Alford, Jalen Johnson, Evan Wiley.
  • The Bulldogs shot 19-for-49 (38.8 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 4-for-15 (26.7 percent) from the three-point line and 20-for-27 from the charity stripe (74.1 percent).
  • Prairie View dominated the battle in the paint, outscoring A&M in the lane 42-22 in the contest.
  • Prairie View also won the rebounding battle 33-25. The Panthers grabbed seven offensive rebounds for 11 second chance points, while the Bulldogs grabbed just five and scored five second chance points.
  • The Panther bench outscored the Bulldog bench in the matchup, producing 21 points to the 18 scored by A&M.
  • Turnovers: Alabama A&M won the turnover battle by a narrow margin, scoring 17 points off of 17 Prairie View turnovers, while the Panthers scored 16 points off of 16 Jaguar turnovers.

The Bulldogs will head back home for their last home stretch of the season as they host Grambling on Thursday, Mar. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Jackson State for Senior Day on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 6 p.m.
