Bulldogs Win in Exciting Fashion Against Grambling

HUNTSVILLE __ Freshman Jalen Johnson wins game for Bulldogs on a tip in as time expired on Thursday night as they defeat Grambling 58-57 in Elmore Gymnasium.

Guard Garrett Hicks led the Bulldogs offensively for the second straight game, scoring a career-high 23 points in the win. The win secured the team a bid in the SWAC Tournament beginning on Tuesday, March 10.

 

First Half
  • Grambling started strong, scoring on their first two possessions, before the Bulldogs got on the board with just over 18 to play.
  • Cam Tucker finished a layup plus the free throw on a strong drive to put the score at 9-8 heading into the first media timeout with 15:09 to play in the half.
  • Minutes later, A&M tied the game at 11 with 13 minutes to play on a three pointer by Garrett Hicks before Grambling stretched their lead out to five points.
  • The Bulldogs found themselves down eight with just under seven minutes remaining before EJ Williams fought for an offensive rebound and stick back, followed by a Tucker steal and finish to make the score 19-15 with 4:41 to play in the half.
  • A&M reduced the deficit to one as TJ Parham scored plus the foul to bring the score to 19-18 at the 2:30 mark and took a 20-19 lead on a long jumper from Hicks, however went into the locker room at half down 23-22.
Second Half
  • Grambling gained some separation to start the second half, pushing the lead to 30-22 at the 17-minute mark.
  • A&M responded with a 7-1 run, pulling within two points and pulled within a single point after a three by Hicks to put the score at 33-32 with 12:33 remaining.
  • The Tigers responded by pushing their lead back up to seven, before another three by Hicks ended the run heading into a timeout called by the Bulldogs.
  • Trailing 45-37, the Bulldogs pulled within five on a fast break score just before the under eight media timeout and later pulled the score to 45-42 with around six minutes to play.
  • Grambling responded with a huge three to go up 48-42 before six points on two straight threes by Hicks put the Bulldogs up 50-48 and forced a Tiger timeout with 4:36 to play.
  • Leading 51-50 with just under four minutes remaining, Grambling scored on a layup followed by a response by the Bulldogs on the next possession, before two free throws gave the Tigers a 54-53 lead with 1:28 to play.
  • On the next possession, Cameron Tucker found Williams for a layup plus the foul shot to go up by two with 1:03 to play, and the Bulldogs forced a stop on to maintain the 56-54 lead with under a minute to play.
  • In the final minute, Grambling responded to make a big three-pointer to retake a 57-56 lead with 10.2 seconds remaining, giving the Bulldogs one final possession. With seconds left, Cameron Alford shot a three for a chance to win the game that was rebounded and tipped in by Jalen Johnson for the game winning basket on a tip in as time expired 58-57.

  • The Bulldogs shot 22-for-55 (40.0 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) from the three-point line and 9-for-16 from the charity stripe (56.3 percent).
  • A&M won the battle in the paint, outscoring Grambling in the lane 28-24 in the contest.
  • The Bulldogs also won the rebounding battle 37-30, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds for 14 second chance points, while the Tigers grabbed just nine and scored nine second chance points.
  • The Grambling bench outscored the A&M bench in the matchup, producing 25 points to the 11 scored by A&M.
  • Turnovers: The Tigers won the turnover battle by a narrow margin, scoring nine points off of 14 Bulldog turnovers, while A&M scored 14 points off of 12 Grambling turnovers.

The Bulldogs will host Jackson State for Senior Night on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the final regular season game before the heading to Prairie View for the opening round of the SWAC Tournament on Tuesday, Mar. 10.
