Men’s Basketball Fall in Close Game to Jackson State

HUNTSVILLE __ Alabama A&M men's basketball failed to score on a last second attempt to tie the game on Saturday night, falling in their final home game of the year to Jackson State 54-51.
 
The backcourt led the Bulldogs once again, as Garrett Hicks poured in 15 points on the night, while Cameron Tucker added 11 points of his own in the close loss.
 

First Half
  • Freshman Garrett Hicks got the scoring started in the ball game for both teams, sinking two free throws two minutes into the game, starting off a strong 5-2 start for the Bulldogs.
  • Jackson State responded to the strong start by A&M by scoring seven unanswered points, taking a 9-5 lead with 15:35 to play in the half, before senior Evan Wiley brought the deficit to a single point after hitting a three pointer.
  • After finding themselves down 12-8, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take a three-point lead at the 10-minute mark, and continued their play and hold of the pace of the game as the teams traded baskets for the next few minutes of the half.
  • With just under eight minutes in the half, the A&M went on a 6-0 run to gain a 21-16 lead, and pushed their lead to eight at 25-17 with two minutes to play, a lead they took into the locker rooms for halftime.
  • Hicks led the Bulldogs in the first half with nine points, followed by center EJ Williams who added six points and a rebound.
Second Half
  • The Bulldogs continued their strong play coming out of intermission, scoring the first five points of the half and stretching their lead to 13 points, going up 30-17.
  • The Tigers pulled within nine with 17 minutes to play, and put the game at 30-23 after two free throws.
  • Jackson State continued to claw back, reducing their deficit to a single point with 14 minutes remaining, before an offensive rebound and put back by Williams pushed the Bulldog lead back to three at 34-31.
  • The teams traded scores over the next few possessions, and the Bulldogs found themselves up 39-37 with 11:14 to play, and later stretched their lead to 45-39 on a fast break score by Cameron Tucker with just under eight minutes to play.
  • With about five minutes to play, forward Brandon Houston scored four straight points to put A&M up 49-41, before Jackson State responded with two baskets of their own to reduce the lead back to four at 49-45.
  • Coming out of the under four timeout leading by the same score, the Bulldogs scored on another fast break layup, however Jackson State responded with a three to put the score at 51-48 with just over three minutes to play.
  • Leading by just one with a minute remaining, the Bulldogs fouled the Tigers with 47.9 seconds to play, where they hit two free throws to take a 52-51 lead.
  • On their next possession, the Bulldogs missed a jump shot to take the lead and were forced to foul to extend the game. The Tigers missed both free throws, and gave the Bulldogs a final chance to win, yet the potential game-winning shot rolled off the rim and the Bulldogs fell 54-51.

  • The Bulldogs shot 20-for-52 (38.5 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) from the three-point line and 8-for-15 from the charity stripe (53.3 percent).
  • Jackson State won the battle in the paint, outscoring Alabama A&M in the lane 26-22 in the contest.
  • The Tigers also won the rebounding battle 36-31, grabbing nine offensive rebounds for 10 second chance points, while the Bulldogs grabbed six offensive rebounds for just six second chance points.
  • The Bulldog bench outscored the Tiger bench in the matchup, producing 19 points to the 12 scored by Jackson State.
  • Turnovers: The turnover battle was near even, with the Tigers scoring six points off of 16 Bulldog turnovers, while A&M scored 14 points off of 12 Jackson State turnovers.
