Alabama A&M Heads Back To SWAC Action With Trip To Grambling

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Following a trip to Mobile to renew a rivalry from their NCAA Division II days, Alabama A&M (3-0, 1-0 SWAC) football heads to Ruston, Louisiana for their annual meeting with Grambling (1-3, 0-1 SWAC). That game will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 2 from Eddie Robinson Stadium.

BEEN A LONG, LONG TIME TOGETHER
The Bulldogs and Tigers go back a ways, with most of that in the program's NCAA Division I era. Looking at the series history dating from 1998, GSU holds an impressive 19-6 advantage and has won the last five meetings. The latter dates to October 4, 2014 with a 38-28 victory at Louis Crews Stadium following AAMU's last win, a 23-9 decision on August 31, 2013 at Grambling.

TOUCHDOWNS AND BIG NUMBERS ABOUND IN MOBILE
Taking on former Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Tuskegee at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, A&M put up big numbers as a team and individually in a 45-35. As a team they rolled up 559 yards of offense with a total of six touchdowns while junior running back Gary Quarles (Cottondale, Ala.) had a career-high 164 yards on the ground.

He would cap a pair of drives in the endzone, including one late from 44-yards out that helped put the game away, and add a pair of receptions for 39 yards. The receiving corps, however, would be a three-headed monster led by junior wide receiver Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim (Miramar, Fla.) with 177 yards on eight catches.

Joining him would be senior wideout Dee Anderson (Dallas, Texas), who snagged five balls for 80 yards but finished three of those in the endzone for touchdown grabs. Rounding out the production from "The Outlaws" was junior Odieu Hilaire (Belle Glade, Fla.) who hauled in eight catches for 78 yards, including a 21-yard TD with five minutes to play.

Slinging the ball around the field for all those yards was graduate quarterback Aqeel Glass (St. Louis, Mo.), who finished with 405 yards, four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions as part of a 27-for-39 day.

Meanwhile, senior linebacker Branden Bailey (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) led the defense with a pair of fumble recoveries and team-high tying five tackles with senior cornerback Ja'Marian Green adding a recovery of his own.

WATCH ME NOW (SEASON LONG EDITION)
With the majority of this spring's top performers back in the fold for Fall 2021, all eyes are on A&M. Glass headlines those in the spotlight as he has been named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List representing the top player at the Football Championship Subdivision, the Deacon Jones Watch List as the top player at an HBCU and both the Reese's Senior Bowl and College Football Performance Awards (CFPA).

He is joined by Ibrahim on the Deacon Jones and has also been named a BOXTOROW Preseason All-American and SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. Those pale in comparison, however, to being the first player selected to play in the inaugural HBCU Legacy Bowl, a new postseason All-Star game featuring the top 100 HBCU National Football League (NFL) draft eligible players.

ABOUT THE GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY TIGERS
After having won their opener 16-10 over Tennessee State (9/5) in the Black College Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, GSU comes into the week having lost their last three.

That streak, however, is fairly deceptive as the first two of those defeats came at Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools. Southern Miss delivered a 37-0 final on September 11 while a high powering Houston squad posted a 45-0 decision a week later. Most recently the Tigers dropped a 24-10 decision to Prairie View on September 25 at the Cotton Bowl in the State Farm Classic.
