HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (3-18, 3-6 SWAC) fell by a 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-12) decision to Alabama State (9-14, 7-2 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's volleyball match on Friday, October 22.
The Bulldogs started with a 6-2 lead before ASU would flip the script and unleash a 9-0 rally to take the lead, 11-6. With the score at 13-9 the Hornets put together a 12-1 run to close out the set 25-10.
Alabama State opened the second set with a 5-0 burst before Alabama A&M had their own 4-0 run to close the gap and be down by one. The Hornets would then score nine of the next 15 points before pushing out a 7-0 rally for a 21-10 advantage.
The Bulldogs answered with back-to-back points before ASU closed the set by earning the final four points to win 25-12.
Alabama State continued their strong play as they powered out to a daunting 16-4 lead. The Bulldogs would respond with three consecutive points to cut it to nine before ASU wrapped up the frame with a 9-5 run to win the set and match with a 25-12 victory.
Freshman middle hitters
Ryann Tolbert (Southfield, Mich.) and
Sydney Morant (Columbus, Ohio) led the Bulldogs with five and three kills, respectively, while freshman outside hitter
Kori Mills (Hiram, Ga.) also added three. Freshman setter
Colleen Kennedy (Santee, Calif.) ignited the offense with six assists and came away with three digs to round out the top performers.
Jada Rhodes had 11 kills for the Hornets while Mahogany Vinson notched eight. McKenzie Boland fueled the offense with 22 assists and Amaya Finley led the defense with nine digs and Emersen Belles had seven.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, October 31 as they battle against Southern. Game time is slated for 9 a.m. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
