HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (1-14, 1-2 SWAC) delivered a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-20) sweep of Mississippi Valley State (1-7, 0-2 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's volleyball match on Monday, October 4.
The teams were tied 13-13 in the opening frame before the Delta Devils notched a mini 3-0 run to pull ahead by three.
The Bulldogs would then flip the switch and score six of the next nine points including two kills from freshman middle hitter
Alondrah Santana (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) to even the score at 19-19. A&M would then unleash a 6-0 run to wrap up the set at 25-19.
The second set started with Mississippi Valley State holding a narrow one-point lead at 5-4 before the Bulldogs used a 7-0 rally to pull ahead by an 11-5 margin.
The Delta Devils then closed the gap to 11-8 before A&M extended their margin with an 8-6 burst to push the score to 19-14 before unleashing a 6-0 run that included a pair of kills from freshman middle hitter
Sydney Morant (Columbus, Ohio.) to close out the set 25-14.
The final frame started like the previous one with MVSU leading by just a point before the Bulldogs went on 5-0 run to stretch their advantage to 17-11. They would then play nearly even the rest of the way as they wrapped up the set and the match with a 25-20 victory.
Freshmen middle hitter
Ryann Tolbert (Southfield, Mich,), senior outside hitter
Ashley Jordan (Bridgetown, Barbados) and Santana led the Bulldogs in kills with seven each while freshman middle hitter
Sydney Morant (Columbus, Ohio) had six.
Sophomore setter
Isis Mitchell (Plano, Texas) fueled the offense with 14 assists and freshman setter
Aerienne Acuff nearly matched her with 13. Defensive specialist
Maci Battle (Meridianville, Ala.) chipped in with 11 digs to round out the top performers.
Jeila Fullerton had 10 kills for the Delta Devils, Sydney Ross dished out nine assists and both Fullerton and Kiya Garza lead the defense with seven digs each.
The Bulldogs will next head to Jackson, Mississippi on Saturday, October 9 for three matches over the weekend. The first of these will come against Arkansas- Pine Bluff with first serve set for 1 p.m.
