JACKSON, Miss. – An early second half goal and lockdown defense were just enough to hold down Alabama A&M (1-3, 1-2 SWAC) in a narrow 2-1 loss at Jackson State (2-0, 2-0 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Friday, March 12.
Offense would be at a premium on the day, however, both clubs would find the back of the net in the first half with the Tigers striking first. That would come in the 14
th minute as Annalise Brunson collected a ball and put it to the back of the goal for a 1-0 advantage at the 13:24 mark.
Near the end of the 29
th minute it would be senior forward
Braejah Washington (Dallas, Texas) who would break through for her second score of the season, this one to knot things up at 1-1 with 28:53 gone by.
That score would hold up for the rest of the half but not much longer as Brunson struck again, this time a little over two minutes into the second half. Maya Thompson found her in front of the net and she quickly put it home for a 2-1 lead.
That would be one of just two shots for JSU in the frame, and one of five overall between both teams, as that goal would be the difference in a narrow victory.
The Bulldogs would fire off four shots, putting three on frame, with Washington delivering the lone goal on the day. She would be joined by sophomore forward
Jameela Barrett (London, England) and senior forward
Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) with a shot on goal apiece. Senior goalkeeper
Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) went the distance in net, making two saves and allowing both goals to fall to 1-3.
Brunson led the way for Jackson State with a pair of goals off the bench on just two shots while Ana Leticia Batista had the other shot on goal. Jordan Hamilton played all 90 minutes in goal, surrendering one score and making a pair of saves to improve to 2-0.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, March 14 as they travel to Southern for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
