HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (2-3, 2-2 SWAC) made an early goal stand up as they outlasted Alcorn State (0-7, 0-7 SWAC) by a 1-0 score in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Friday, March 19.
The Bulldogs would dominate the offensive opportunities as they out shot ASU by a whopping 26-2 with 11 of those coming in the first half. One of those would come in the 19
th minute as sophomore forward
Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) connected from just outside the box on the left side for a 1-0 lead at the 18:52 mark.
They would fire off seven more shots over the remaining 21-plus minutes while preventing any from the Braves to head to the half with that one goal margin.
Alcorn State would continue to come under fire as A&M powered off 15 more shots, including a number that were point blank that Vivian Lugo managed to get in front of. Despite that barrage, she would hold the line but would see just one more shot from her offense in what would be a narrow 1-0 loss.
Rushing delivered the Bulldogs lone goal and fired off 11 shots, five on net, while junior midfielder
Sherice Clark (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and freshman forward
Gabby Cumby (Corpus Christi, Texas) each had four shots with three on frame. In net, senior goalkeeper
Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) went the distance, making one save to earn the shutout and move to 2-3 on the year.
Mireya Gonzalez posted the lone shot on goal for Alcorn State while Paula Cabeza had the only other shot. Lugo delivered a strong performance in net as she allowed just the one score against nine saves. She falls to 0-6 on the season.
The Bulldogs are back in action in a week's time as they travel to Houston, Texas to take on Texas Southern. That game is slated to be under the lights at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26.
