Alabama A&M Notches Second Straight 1-0 Victory; Downs Texas Southern on the Road

HOUSTON, Texas – In what is quickly becoming a regular occurrence, Alabama A&M (3-3, 3-2 SWAC) delivered its second straight 1-0 victory as they downed Texas Southern (3-5, 2-3 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Friday, March 26.

The first half would be one dominated on the offensive end as the Bulldogs fired off 14 shots but it would be the one stemming from a foul in the box that would be the difference maker. In the 22nd minute freshman forward Gabby Cumby (Corpus Christi, Texas) was taken down on her way to the goal – and then she would take down the Tigers as she converted on a penalty kick at the 21:07 mark.

From there A&M would manage eight more shots the rest of the half but TSU's defense was equal to the task as they turned away each of them to hold at that 1-0 margin at the half. The second half would see a more even offensive approach between the teams as the Bulldogs managed just a slight 13-12 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes.

All would be to no avail as both defenses held up but with Alabama A&M holding that 1-0 lead, that was all they had to do to pull to out the their second straight shutout and third of the season.

Sophomore forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) pounded out six shots, putting one on frame, but it would be Cumby's lone goal among her six shots that would account for the only offense not, not just for A&M but in the game. Senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) recorded her third shutout of the year, making four saves as she went the distance and improved to 3-3.

Crisley Pavon led Texas Southern with a pair of shots on goal while Lex Luna had four shots and one on net. Carissa Reese had the only other shot to require a save and Oriana Palacios played all 90 minutes in goal, making four saves to suffer the narrow loss.

The Bulldogs are right back in action on Sunday, March 28 as they travel to Prairie View A&M. That game is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
