PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Facing one of the stronger teams in the league on the road, Alabama A&M (4-3, 4-2 SWAC) delivered a lockdown defense and made a late goal stand up as they produced their third straight 1-0 victory as they downed Prairie View A&M in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Sunday, March 28.
The teams would combine for seven shots in the first half, five by PVAMU, but would not be able to capitalize on either as they would reach the half still deadlocked at 0-0. That would persist deep into the second half, all the way to the 76
th minute before the Bulldogs would break through.
That would come off the foot of sophomore forward
Jameela Barrett (London, England) as she took it herself and connected at the 75:56 mark for a 1-0 lead. From there the Panthers would manage just one shot, a save by senior goalkeeper
Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) and would not present a legitimate threat as A&M closed out their third straight 1-0 victory.
Barrett would lead the effort for Alabama A&M with her late goal on her only shot of the game while sophomore forward
Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) had two of the Bulldogs' five shots. Medina went the distance and made six saves for her third straight shutout, all by 1-0 scores, and improves to 4-3.
Jojo Bernal led Prairie View with four of their 10 shots, putting three on frame, while Lesa Griffin, D'Sanye Nugent and Randi Plair had the other shots on goal. In net Quinn Josiah played all 90 minutes, surrendering the lone goal to suffer the loss.
The Bulldogs close out the regular season as they travel to rival Alabama State on Friday, April 2. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama.
