Alabama A&M Equals Program's DI Win Streak at Seven With Sweep at Alcorn State; Ties Longest Since 1996

LORMAN, Miss. – In an unprecedented run, Alabama A&M (9-12, 9-7 SWAC) won their seventh straight to tie the program's Division I Era record and equal the longest such stretch in 24 years as they completed the series sweep of Alcorn State (6-15, 6-13 SWAC) with 5-2 and 4-3 victories in an NCAA Division I baseball seven inning doubleheader on Friday, April 23.

The streak ties the 2010 team that won seven consecutive from February 20-28 of that year and is the longest since the 1996 team won eight straight. The current stretch equals the Division I program record.

GAME 1: ALABAMA A&M 5, ALCORN STATE 2
A scoreless affair into the third, the Braves would be the first to break through as Tristin Garcia doubled down the left field line and was driven in two batters later by Brandon Rembert for a 1-0 lead. They would double that on the very next batter as Tyler Daniels doubled home Rembert for the two-run advantage through three.

Not to be outdone, A&M responded in the top of the fourth as senior shortstop Pierre Brewton (Madison, Ala.) singled and went to third on an error before scoring on a fielders' choice by freshman outfielder Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.) to cut the lead in half. With the bases loaded they would then tie it up as outfielder Malik Frails (Harlem, Ga.) lofted a sacrifice fly before back-to-back outs ended the inning.

The Bulldogs would break out the bats once again in the top of the fifth as consecutive one out walks and a fly out put runners on second and third. Junior outfielder Teddy Bridges (Montgomery, Ala.) then singled home both runs to take a 4-2 lead before making it a three-run margin with a third run on an error by the catcher.

While their offense remained silent the rest of the game, their defense and pitching locked down the Braves, holding them to just one hit over the final three innings, a lone single in the seventh, to close out the 5-2 victory and win their sixth straight.

Bridges led the way for A&M with a 2-for-4 day that saw him drive in two, score a run and swipe a bag while Bastardo and Frails had the only other RBIs, each without benefit of a hit. Brewton rounded out the offense at 1-for-2 with two runs, a pair of walks and a steal and junior pitcher Peyton Baker (Acworth, Ga.) pitched a complete game, allowing just the two earned runs and striking out five to move to 2-4.

Rembert and Daniels delivered the only RBIs for Alcorn State while Garcia went 3-for-3 with a double. Jose Fernandez pitched all seven innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven to suffer loss and drop to 1-5.

GAME 2: ALABAMA A&M 4, ALCORN STATE 3
The Bulldogs would take the early lead in the series finale as Brewton laced a one-out double down the right field line and then advanced to third on an error. In a rarity, he would then steal home as part of a double steal with Bastardo for the 1-0 lead.

The clubs would then combine for just one hit over the next two innings before the Braves Garrett Palladino was a one-man wrecking crew in the third. With one out he beat out a ball to the shortstop and then proceeded to steal second and third on consecutive plays before coming home on an error to tie it at 1-1.

Alcorn State would take the lead with a quiet rally that consisted of a walk, fielders' choice, single and passed ball before A&M knotted it up at 2-2 with a Bastardo single in the top of the fifth. It would continue to be a nip-and-tuck affair, and one without a great deal of fireworks at the plate as the Bulldogs retook the lead, 3-2, with back-to-back walks, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch in the sixth.

The Braves would answer the bell in the home half of the inning, however, as Rembert doubled to lead off the inning and Daniels singled home pinch runner Kobe Butts to tie it up a 3-3. They would threaten again as Daniels advanced to second on a sac bunt but no further as A&M pitching shutdown ASU with a groundout and a strikeout.

Brewton was essentially a walking double in the top of the seventh as he took one for the team with a hit by pitch of his own and then showed no ill effects as he promptly swiped second to put the go-ahead run in scoring position.

A walk by Bastardo and a single by Bridges then loaded the bases, setting the stage for sophomore catcher Dillon Roop (New Market, Ala.) to deliver a sac fly to left that brought home pinch runner sophomore Khari Caver (Riverdale, Ga.) to take a 4-3 lead. A&M would continue to threaten as Bastardo was thrown out at the plate on a fielders' choice before both runners stole to make it second and third. A walk would reload the bases but all would be stranded with an inning-ending fly out

Alcorn would rally in the bottom of the seventh with a single and intentional walk to put runners on first and second but would not be able to capitalize as the Bulldogs struck out the final two batters to cap off the 4-3 victory.

Bastardo and Roop would have the only RBIs and each added a walk to pace Alabama A&M while Brewton was 1-for-3 with a double, two steals and a run scored. Freshman pitcher Jason Garcia (Miami, Fla.) went the first 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five and senior pitcher Michael Hovermill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished it off, throwing the final 3.2 and surrendering just one run against five strikeouts to collect the win and move to 2-3.

Daniels had the Braves lone RBI on the day, going 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored and Rembert lashed a double for his one hit. George Osborne III pitched the first five innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five while Andrew Meadows threw the final two, allowing two runs and four walks to fall to 0-1 on the year.

The Bulldogs will put their seven game win streak on the line next weekend as they host Southwestern Athletic Conference leading Jackson State from April 30 through May 2. The first two games of the series are slated for 2 p.m. starts with the Sunday finale set for 1 p.m.
