Alabama A&M Women’s Volleyball Falls 3-0 To AAC Opponent Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Alabama A&M (0-2, 0-0 SWAC) fell in their second match of the season with a 3-0 decision to American Athletic Conference (AAC) member Tulane (2-0, 0-0 AAC) in an NCAA Division I women's volleyball match on Friday, August 27.

The Bulldogs took an early 4-1 lead before Tulane would close the gap with six kills, two apiece from Lexie Douglas and Anna Davis to push the score to 9-8. The Green Wave would then drastically expand their lead with a 9-0 run that included four kills and an ace to stretch the margin to 18-8. From there they closed out a 25-13 victory to take a 1-0 match lead.

The Green Wave would waste no time in taking command in the second set as they powered out to a massive 16-4 lead before AAMU bounced back with a 5-0 burst to cut it to 16-9. Trailing 19-9, the Bulldogs would pull to within six, 19-13, but would get no closer as Tulane notched a 25-17 decision.

In what would be the final frame, the Green Wave took an early 7-3 lead before extending to a 15-6 advantage as they scored eight of the next 11 points.

A&M would then score three straight only to see that mirrored by Tulane to make it 18-9. It would remain close but five kills down the stretch, two apiece from Mackenzie Martin and Yvette Burcescu, would help close out the sweep with a 25-15 victory.

Junior middle hitter Alana Cox (Madison, Ala.) led the Bulldogs in kills with six and freshman setter Arienne Acuff (French Lick, Ind.) fueled the offense with 12 assists. Senior defensive specialist Maci Battle (Meridianville, Ala.) chipped in with four digs and sophomore middle hitter Catherine Ndukwe produced four blocks to round out the top performers.

Burcescu had six kills for the Green Wave while Chelsea Harvey had 31 assists and Julian Dits lead the defense with 11 digs.

The Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow morning taking on Northwestern State in the final of the Tulane Invitational. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. in New Orleans, Louisiana.
