Alabama A&M Women’s Soccer Holds On in Extra Time to Tie UAH 0-0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (0-3-1, 0-0-0 SWAC) impressively pushed through for 110 minutes and stopped Alabama-Huntsville (0-0-1, 0-0-0 GSC) from getting on the score board, resulting in a 0-0 decision in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Thursday, September 2.

The Charger's offense was more dominant in the first half as Carmen Endicott fired a shot on the bottom right of the goal at the 10:42 minute mark but was saved by A&M senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.).

More than 20 minutes later at the 31:20 minute mark Medina would be tested again this time by Devyn Thompson who fired the ball to the bottom center of the net, only to see it knocked away and keep the clubs deadlocked. From there neither team would record another shot as they headed to the half scoreless.

The Chargers started the second half similar to the first, with Laura Hasani having back-to-back shots on goal at the 56:48 and 63:22-minute mark that were both saved by Medina. The Bulldogs defense would step up in the following minutes, not allowing UAH another chance at goal before they had an opportunity to get on the score board.

Junior defender Taylor Stokes (Katy, Texas) would strike at the bottom left side of the goal, only to have it saved. A pressing fifty seconds later sophomore center Alana Paul (Clinton, Md.) took a shot to the top left of the goal, it would be saved by Adriana Wright.

The Chargers would have two more shots before the end of regulation by Endicott and Caroline Buchanan at the 72:56 and 77:41-minute marks, respectively, but Medina would corral both. With just under three minutes left, freshman forward Lauryn Christophe (Conyers, Ga.) had A&M last best opportunity but could not connect.

With less than two minutes to go UAH would aim to break the tie as Buchanan fired a shot that was saved by Medina. As time expired, Gonzalez attempted to bury the ball to the bottom left of the net but was denied to send the teams to overtime. In the extra session both teams fired off shots, the first one by Melanie Brannon in the 95th minute but Chargers could not convert.

AAMU had an attempted shot on goal by Paul at the 98:15 mark but it would be saved by Wright. Second overtime would see both teams with a pair of shots, none of which would connect. Those would be the last, best opportunities to avoid what would end up as a 0-0 deadlock.

Paul lead A&M with three shots, two on net, while Christophe finished with three shots, one of which was on frame. Medina played all ninety minutes, making nine saves to secure the shutout.

Endicott ran the offense for the Chargers, notching seven shots with two on goal. Wright anchored the defense, as she went the distance playing all ninety minutes with three saves and a clean sheet.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday, September 5 as they travel to Florida to tackle Jacksonville University. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
