HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Defense was the order of the day as Alabama A&M (4-9-2, 2-3-2 SWAC) posted the not often seen 0-0 deadlock as they tangled with Mississippi Valley State (0-11-1, 0-6-1 SWAC) in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and NCAA Division I women's soccer action on Friday, October 21.
It would be a tale of two different teams on offense but the same on defense as the two clubs combined for 32 shots and no goals. The breakdown would see MVSU manage just four shots, two on frame, while the Bulldogs would pound out 28 shots, half of them landing on net. They would be consistent with 14 in each half while limiting the Devilettes to just one shot in the second half.
Despite numerous scrums in front of the net for both teams, neither would be able to find the back of the net. A&M's best opportunity came on back-to-back shots by senior forward
Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas), who posted a header that was saved and fired off another from close range that was blocked with 85:44 and 85:50 gone by, respectively. From there the clubs would close out the 0-0 tie minutes later.
Rushing led the Bulldogs with six shots, four on net, while freshman forward
Taylor McNeal (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished with five shots and three on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Ma'Kayla Prince (Hamilton, Ohio) was masterful again, posting her second career shutout with a pair of saves. She moves to 1-1-1 on the year.
It would be a different story on the other side of the ledger as Rahael Aka-Ety had half of the Devilettes four shots, putting one of her two on frame. Juliette Charriez had the only other shot on goal and McKenzie McCarthy went the distance in net, making a whopping 14 saves to improve to 0-11-1.
The Bulldogs close out the home season on Sunday, October 23 when they host Alcorn on Senior Day. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Bulldog Field with Senior Day festivities set for 11:30 a.m.
