Alabama A&M Women’s Soccer Honors Seven Seniors; Falls 1-0 To Alcorn State In Home Finale

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – As they have all year Alabama A&M (4-10-2, 2-4-2 SWAC) delivered on defense but a lone score proved the deciding factor as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Alcorn State (4-9-3, 3-3-2 SWAC) on Senior Day and in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Sunday, October 23.

The Braves would manage just three shots in the first half but would capitalize on their second, that coming in the 11th minute. Samara Nunn drove the ball into the offensive zone, finding the foot of Jaidyn Matheu who put the ball to the back right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 10:19 mark.

The Bulldogs would respond with four shots in a span of just under 10 minutes but would not be able to connect and Alcorn would have only one more shot the rest of the first half. That would come at 35:19 by Audrey Williams and require a save by freshman goalkeeper Ma'Kayla Prince (Hamilton, Ohio). The clubs would then head to the break with that one goal margin 10 minutes later.

In the second half the teams would combine for 15 shots and tried to get most of those within the first 15 minutes as they fired off 10 of them, six by the Braves and four by Alabama A&M. Of those, Alcorn would put three on net as compared to just one by the Bulldogs.

From there the teams would settle until A&M's best opportunities came in a one minute span with 20 minutes to play. Freshman forward Averiee Kibbles (Cypress, Texas) put one on frame at 69:10 and the club then got a pair of shots off of a corner kick as senior forward Jameela Barrett (London, England) and freshman forward Arianna Kinsley (Estero, Fla.) fired ones that were blocked and wide right, respectively, at 69:55 and 70:02.

That would be the Bulldogs last best chance as they managed just one more shot, one that went high in the 88th minute, as they dropped a narrow 1-0 decision in their home finale.

Senior forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) fired off four shots, putting two on frame, while Barrett also had four shots to lead A&M. Kibbles had the only other shot on goal and Prince went the distance in goal, recording five saves and allowing just the one score to fall to 1-2-1 on the year.

Matheu led Alcorn with the lone score off an assist by Nunn and Emily Serrato put both of her shots on goal. She was joined by Yasia Reyes with a pair of shots and Paula Argelaguet notched the shutout with three saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season on Friday, October 28 when they head to rival Alabama State. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama.
