Early Sets Set Tone as Alabama A&M Drops 3-0 Decision at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Alabama A&M (7-23, 6-8 SWAC) could never get their feet under them as they dropped a 3-0 decision by scores of 25-12, 25-11, 25-23 at Bethune-Cookman (6-20, 6-8 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's volleyball match on Sunday, November 6.

B-CU jumped out to the early 5-1 lead before the Bulldogs battled back to within three at 10-7 in the opening frame. The Wildcats, however, would deliver the knockout blow over the next 13 points as they posted an 11-2 run to go up 21-10 before closing out a 25-12 victory.

Up 1-0, Bethune-Cookman doubled down in Game 2 as they exploded for a debilitating 12-3 set-opening run. A&M would eventually close to within 17-11 as they took eight of the next 13 only to see the Wildcats run the table with an 8-0 burst that wrapped up a 25-11 victory for a 2-0 match lead.

It would be another solid start for B-CU as they scored five of the first seven points of the third but this time Alabama A&M battled back, closing the gap to 8-7. Down 14-8 midway through, they put together an 8-1 run that flipped the script and put them ahead 17-16 before the clubs alternated the next six points, leaving the Bulldogs with a 20-18 advantage.

They would make it a two-point lead off an attack error before the Wildcats notched a 4-1 run to knot it up at 22-22. Freshman middle blocker Kemora Coachman (Harvest, Ala.) drilled a kill to regain the lead but a service error tied it again and Alleah Dallas pounded back-to-back kills to end it with a 25-23 decision.

Freshman outside hitter Bailey Duckett (Huntsville, Ala.) notched 10 kills and freshman setter Grace Tapscott (Hartselle, Ala.) dished out 23 assists to lead A&M's offensive effort. Defensively, freshman outside hitter Caitlin Shaw (Desoto, Texas) posted 12 digs and freshman libero Miya Benson (Desoto, Texas) added 10 to round out the top performers.

Dallas led B-CU with 10 kills to go with eight block assists and a solo block and Alisha Callender finished with 27 assists and 13 digs. Malina Spencer added nine kills, Mecca Freeman had six digs and five kills and Adriana Marrero capped things off with a match-high 15 digs.

The Bulldogs close out their final regular season road trip when they travel to defending league champion Florida A&M for a 5 p.m. (CST) match on Monday, November 7.
