TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Alabama A&M (9-16, 8-7 SWAC) delivered an offensive barrage in the second half to upset Florida A&M (11-15, 9-6 SWAC) 71-63 in an NCAA Division I men's basketball game on Monday, February 21.
Junior guard
Cameron Tucker (Birmingham, Ala.) led the Bulldogs with 18 points and eight rebounds while junior forward
Jalen Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) notched 17 points and 10 boards. Junior guard
Garrett Hicks (Madison, Ala.) chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds while
Dailin Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had seven points, and five boards.
The Bulldogs built a 14-7 lead within the first six minutes that included seven points from Tucker and four from Johnson. The Rattlers would respond with a 25-15 run that consisted of 11 points from MJ Randolph and eight from Kameron Reaves to flip the switch and take the advantage, 32-29 heading into the break.
AAMU would start the second half with a mini 10-7 burst to tie the game, 39-39 before scoring 16 of the next 22 that included 10 points from Hicks to pull away and take the lead, 55-45 with 5:07 showing on the clock.
FAMU would respond with a 14-10 rally that consisted of seven points from Reaves to close the gap to 65-59. Over the remainder of the frame, the Bulldogs would then score six of the final 10 that including four points from sophomore forward
Anjay Cortez (Charlotte, N.C.) to close out the 71-63 victory.
Randolph would lead the Rattlers with a game-high 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals with Reaves following with 18 points and four rebounds. D.J. Jones added 13 points and six boards to round out the top performers.
Alabama A&M will return home on Saturday, February 26 to take on Alabama State. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Elmore Gymnasium.
