Steady Offensive Push Too Much To Overcome As Alabama A&M Falls 65-58 at Second Place Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama A&M (8-12, 6-4 SWAC) saw their four-game win streak snapped as they fell by a 65-58 score at Southern (10-11, 8-2 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's basketball game on Saturday, February 5.

Senior forward Dariauna Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) just missed a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs while senior center Jada Clowers (Macon, Ga.) came away with 12 points and four caroms behind 6-of-8 shooting.

Sophomore guard Darian Burgin (Cincinnati, Ohio) added six points and seven boards and graduate guard Nigeria Jones (Lincoln, Neb.) had eight points, four assists, three boards and a pair of steals. Junior guard Jill Harris (Navarre, Fla.) knocked down a pair of treys on her way to eight points and graduate forward Teliyah Jeter (Taylors, S.C.) chipped in with six points, five boards and two blocks.

The clubs would battle through three ties and as many lead changes over the first three-plus minutes before the final one of the latter sparked a 6-0 run that put SU up 10-5 by the 3:16 mark. They would then maintain at least a three-point advantage before the Bulldogs went from down 13-9 to up 15-13 with a 6-0 burst of their own. That would be fueled entirely by back-to-back triples by Harris and help A&M knot things up at 15-15 at the quarter break.

The Jaguars would get off to a fast start at the beginning of the second quarter with three straight buckets to make it 21-15 by the 8:37 mark but would then go ice cold as neither team would score over the next 4:36. When someone did take the lid off the bucket it would be Southern with a layup by Tyneisha Metcalf to stretch the margin to eight.

From there, however, the teams would be even for the remainder of the half but even, with SU holding an eight-point lead, meant they would maintain that advantage at the break with a 29-21 margin.

A&M would close to within eight, 33-25, in the first two and a half minutes of the third but the Jaguars would regroup and use a 7-1 run to extend to a 40-26 advantage with 4:49 showing on the clock. They would then lead by as many as 15 points before closing the period with a 51-38 advantage.

SU would build on that margin in the fourth quarter as they went up 61-47 just past the midway point before the Bulldogs rallied to within nine with five straight points. They would eventually claw to within eight, 64-56, with 1:11 to play but could get no closer as the Jaguars closed out the 65-58 victory little more than a minute later.

Metcalf produced a game-high 18 points behind 8-of-13 shooting and added four boards while Amani McWain finished with 11 points and eight caroms. They were joined by Genovea Johnson with nine points, five rebounds and three assists and Diamond Hunter with seven points, three assists, two steals and three boards. Nakia Kincey added eight points and Kayla Watson rounded out the top performers with six points.

The Bulldogs are right back in action as they stay within the State of Louisiana to take on Grambling for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Monday, February 7.
