AUBURN, Ala. – Alabama A&M (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) faced their toughest competition of the season as they fell 7-0 at No. 14 Auburn (7-0, 0-0 SEC) in an NCAA Division I women's tennis match on Sunday, February 6.
The Tigers quickly validated their Top-15 national ranking as they swept all three doubles matches to go up 1-0 early. Freshman
Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) and senior
India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) dropped a 6-1 decision to Madeline Meredith and Anastasia Astakhova at No. 3 doubles.
Meanwhile, junior
Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman
Kennedy Ward (Hoover, Ala.) and senior
Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) and junior
Neha Ghare (Pune, India) each fell 6-0 at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions, respectively.
Auburn would build on that advantage early in singles play as Meredith posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Woods at the fifth position and Astakhova notched a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory over Ward. A 6-0, 6-1 decision by Georgie Axon over
Neha Ghare then clinched the match victory for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs top performances in the final three matches would see Boyd battle Ariana Arseneault at the top spot before falling 6-1, 6-2 while Brown challenged Adeline Flach 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.
