MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Competing in their final match at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pod, Alabama A&M (5-9, 5-2 SWAC) dropped a 4-1 decision to Prairie View (5-14, 5-2 SWAC)* in an NCAA Division I women's tennis match on Monday, March 14.
 
It would be a tightly contested affair for much of doubles play, despite a 6-0 decision by Gabrielle Leslie and Jada Hill over juniors Ximena D. Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) at the No. 2 spot.
 
From there, freshman Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) and senior India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) would pull out a 6-4 victory over Salma S. Villalobos and Ruju Chauhan at the three spot to keep the doubles point alive. That would leave the No. 1 position where Victoria F. Castillo and Mahogani Green had all they could handle before escaping with a 7-5 win over junior Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) and sophomore Neha Ghare (Pune, India).
 
Up 1-0 with the doubles win, the Panthers would double that lead as Castillo defeated Brown 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 before Woods knocked off Villalobos 6-1, 6-4 at the sixth position. Ramirez then battled Hill at No. 3 before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to make it a 3-1 PVAMU lead. They would then wrap up the victory with a three set-decision at the fifth spot as Claudia Andrea Islas Medina defeated Ghare 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 to close out the 4-1 win.
 
Alabama A&M returns to action with midweek home match as Western Kentucky visits Huntsville on Wednesday, March 17. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the Huntsville Tennis Center.
