HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Stepping out of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action, Alabama A&M (5-10, 5-2 SWAC) fell 6-1 to Western Kentucky (11-6, 0-1 C-USA) in an NCAA Division I women's tennis match on Thursday, March 17.
WKU came out strong, as Sofia Blanco and Samantha Martinez paired together for a 6-0 decision over freshman
Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) and senior
India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) at the No. 3 position. They would then take the doubles point as junior
Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) and freshman
Kennedy Ward (Hoover, Ala.) fell to Cora-Lynn vonDungern and Paola Cortez by a 6-1 score at the top spot.
Holding the doubles point, the Hilltoppers would then wrap up the match in the first three singles contests, the closest being a 6-2, 6-3 victory by Rachel Hermanova over Ramirez at No. 4. They would notch the next two singles as well before Boyd and vonDungern hooked up in an epic match at No. 1 singles.
In that one Boyd won the opening frame 7-6, taking it in the ninth point, before vonDungern evened it with a 6-2 decision. The third and final set would see 24 points as Boyd pulled out the dramatic 13-11 victory to close out the 6-1 final.
Alabama A&M returns to action on Sunday, March 20 as they head to nearby Nashville, Tennessee to take on Belmont. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
