HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Almost a year to the day since their meeting last postseason, No. 2 Seed Alabama A&M (15-13, 13-5 SWAC) women's basketball will face recent rival No. 7 Seed Grambling (13-16, 10-8 SWAC) in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Quarterfinal at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9. That game, and all games in the tournament, will be played at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Bulldogs come in having won an NCAA Division I Era program record seven straight, a stretch that helped them to the most SWAC wins in program history and the No. 2 seed in the tournament for just the second time. Even with that being the case, they face the last team to beat them in Grambling, which posted an 81-72 victory in Louisiana on February 7.
Since that win the Tigers are 3-4, a seven game stretch that includes a narrow 55-51 loss at A&M on Thursday, March 3 and a 64-56 win at current No. 3 Seed Alabama State on Saturday, March 5.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The matchup is a familiar and tightly contested one for both teams with the Tigers holding a narrow 19-15 advantage in 34 meetings since the 2006-07 season.
Last season the teams met in back-to-back games at the end of the year with Grambling posting a slim 72-68 victory in Louisiana on March 6 before claiming a SWAC Tournament Quarterfinal five days later by a 58-50 score.
In terms of winning streaks in the series, A&M delivered seven straight from January 7, 2008 through January 4, 2011 while GSU's longest run was six consecutive from March 7, 2015 to January 1, 2018.
