MIAMI, Fla. – A game that was originally not on the schedule is now a game that officially does not count, despite all efforts to play it, as Alabama A&M (2-3, 0-0 SWAC) and Florida International (2-3, 0-0 C-USA) were unable to finish their scheduled women's soccer contest on Wednesday, September 7 due to severe weather, primarily lightning, in the greater Miami area.
Originally added to the schedule to break up a 10-day layoff, it would see the teams manage to play just 21 minutes but be on campus for approximately six hours in an attempt to get the game in. Lightning shortly after kickoff derailed the initial attempt and several others were made in between the mandatory 30-minute lightning breaks between strikes but to no avail.
FIU led 3-0 at the time with a pair of goals by Nikole Solis (6:03, 9:41) and one by Kim Schneider, the first and third being assisted by Farah El Tayar. None would end up counting, however, as a game must go at least 70 minutes in order to be ruled official.
"We had a number of family and friends of Bulldog Soccer here today," said head coach
Emanuel Stephens. "Unfortunately we weren't able to have an opportunity to finish the game but I want to thank those individuals for coming out and supporting us, especially with the weather being what it was."
Alabama A&M returns to action this Sunday, September 11 as they travel to Clarkesville, Tennessee to take on Austin Peay. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
