Big First-Half Run Key in Alabama A&M’s Rout of Oakwood

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team led from start to finish and used a big first-half run to pull away from Oakwood in a 111-59 victory in an exhibition game on Monday night at the AAMU Event Center.
 
The Bulldogs turned a six-point advantage into a 23-point lead, with the help of a 17-0 run, in a three-minute span in the first half and did not look back in pulling away from the Ambassadors. 
 
Jayland Randall paced four players in double figures with 16 points, on 5-of-8 shooting, with three rebounds and one assist. Dailin Smith recorded 15 points, three steals and one assist, while London Riley added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, along with three boards and one steal. Anthony Bryant chipped in 10 points, three boards, one assist and one steal. Defensively, Clance Crosby finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Brian Williams led Oakwood with 15 points, on 6-of-10 shooting, along with one rebound. Amyr Dickerson registered 10 points and three boards.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M raced out to a 14-2 lead after an EJ Williams layup with just over 15 minutes to play in the opening half.
 
Oakwood closed the gap to 14-6 after a JB Moore dunk and pair of free throws by Jubelin Prophet with a little less than 14 minutes to play.
 
A Jayland Randall layup extended AAMU's lead to 21-10 with 11:22 remaining, but the Ambassadors refused to go down quietly, cutting the margin to 21-15 after a Zanteous Thornton bucket with 9:47 left.
 
The Bulldogs responded and held Oakwood without a bucket for more than three minutes, as Alabama A&M used a 17-0 run to push the advantage to 38-15 after a London Riley triple with 6:08 left in the half.
 
Alabama A&M continued to stretch the lead as Oakwood could not get much going offensively. The Bulldogs the crowd at the Event Center rocking after a dunk by Joshua Hughley with 1:21 left as AAMU extended the lead to 46-20.
 
The Ambassadors got the final four points of the half, cutting the deficit to 46-24 at the break.
 
Alabama A&M continued to push the offense, using a 18-10 run to begin the second half as Dailin Smith's layup gave the Bulldogs a commanding 62-34 lead with just under 16 minutes to play.
 
Free throws by Austin Harvell increased the margin to 76-38 with 11:36 remaining and Oakwood could not recover as Alabama A&M cruised to the exhibition victory.

  • Alabama A&M shot 55.4 percent (41-of-74) from the field and 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the free-throw line
  • The Bulldogs registered 53 rebounds, with 33 coming off the defensive glass
