ITTA BENA, Miss. –
Messiah Thompson's jumper as time expired in double overtime Saturday night lifted Alabama A&M to a thrilling 70-68 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over Mississippi Valley State inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
Thompson had been quiet for much of the night, finishing with just six points, but came up with the big basket when A&M needed it the most.
The Bulldogs improved to 10-15 overall and 6-6 in league play with the win. The Delta Devils fell to 3-23 and 2-10.
The game was tied 52-all at the end of regulation and 59-all after the first overtime.
Dailin Smith (Colorado Springs, CO) led A&M with 20 points. He was 7-of-11 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Cameron Tucker (Birmingham, AL) and
Lorenzo Downey (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, including 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from 3-point range, and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the free throw line.
A&M won the game in large part due to its reserves. The Bulldogs got 40 points from their bench compared to just 13 for the Delta Devils.
Tyronnn Mosley led MVSU with 21 points. Terry Collins and Alvin Stredic finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Delta Devils shot 42 percent (21-of-50) from the field, including 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 82.8 percent (24-of-29) from the charity stripe.
A&M is back in action Monday night at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Bulldogs will host Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M next weekend in their final homestand of the season.
