JACKSON, Miss. – The Alabama A&M women's tennis team (2-3, 1-0 SWAC) picked up a win on the opening day of the SWAC Tennis Pod on Friday, defeating Southern 4-2 in their first conference match of the spring.
The Bulldogs took the doubles point to start the contest, with the pairing of
Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) and
Yana Dhamija (Gurugram, India) defeating Agye Mintah and Takalani Molaoa at No. 1, followed by
Neha Ghare (Pune, India) and
Alicia Owegi (Nairobi, Kenya) winning 6-2 at No. 3 over Olivia Jenkins and Kourtni Stewart.
Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) earned a win in singles play at the No. 2 flight, defeating Stewart in straight sets (7-6, 6-2), while Diaz and Ghare both fell to their respective opponents by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile, the matchup at. No. 5 and No. 6 secured the win for the Bulldogs, with Dhamida defeating Sasha Taruberekera (6-1, 6-1), followed by Owegi taking down Jenkins (6-2, 6-2). The matchup between Boyd and Mahoa went unfinished at No. 1, with both sides tied at one game each.
