Baseball Takes SWAC Opener Against Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. - Playing in the opening game of SWAC play for the season, Alabama A&M took game one of the three-game road season against Jackson State by a score of 13-9 on Braddy Field on Friday evening.

After a pair of scoreless innings from both sides to start the contest, Alabama A&M (8-8) found their bats in the top of the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Tommy Easley down the right field line with the bases loaded to score Chevalier Dorris, Mekhi Lloyd, and Chandler Stocking.

The Tigers responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits. After a one-out single, JSU drove in the first run on a double to the right, followed later by a single to left center to drive in another two scores.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the fifth, the Bulldogs rallied for the final lead change, scoring five. Back-to-back singles form Stocking and Easley and a walk from Jared Tribett chased JSU starter Jesse Caver and brought in Daelan Caraway out of the bullpen. Blake Martin drew a walk on the next at-bat, bringing home the tying run, while CJ Mervilus walked two outs later to bring in the leading run.

Tribett crossed the plate next for the 6-4 edge, with another pair of bases loaded walks giving A&M an 8-4 lead.

Jackson State reduced the lead once more in the bottom half of the inning, scoring the first of three runs on a walk, while pulling within one at 8-7 before the close of the frame.

Following another run allowed by the Bulldogs to tie the game in the sixth, A&M took final control of the contest with a five-run seventh. Dorris and Lloyd both earned hits to get on base, with Dorris scoring two batters later off a single to right field from Stocking. Easley and Tribett drove in runs on the next two at-bats, while Martin scored the final run on a throwing error.

Seven Bulldogs scored runs and six batters combined for 12 total hits in the game. Easley had an outstanding day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a season-high five RBI and two scores, followed by Stocking with a hot bat on the day, finishing 3-for-4, driving in two runs, and scoring three.

Junior right-hander Jason Marono picked up his first win on the season for A&M, pitching for 4.0 innings and allowing two runs on just one hit. Jackson Hall earned the start on the mound, working the first four innings of play and surrendered seven runs on five hits and two strikeouts, while Tyler Campbell allowed one hit off the five batters he faced in his lone inning of work.
